All Good Reporters belongs to an online group called Encouraging Court Reporting Students. The goal is exactly that, one of encouragement.
To graduate from school, besides all the academic classes, you must pass a series of speed tests, starting with 60 WPM and ending with 225 WPM (at the bare minimum). Each level brings a new level of frustration and self-doubt. We hit a plateau at 150 WPM. We thought we would never get out of there and end up like a fellow student who was languishing at 120 WPM for the past six months.
Luckily, we had a few things going for us: Someone to compete with — a fellow student. If she passed a test, we were hellbent on passing ours. At this time, we also lived at the Y — and hated it. We wanted out of there so bad. The only way to do that was to graduate. And the third thing we had going was determination — we were going to graduate if it killed us! It almost did, too.
So our hats are off to you, students. Been there; done that. You can only go up from here!
